Fairway woods for distance and ease

The fairway wood is the club for long shots from the grass. With a larger, lighter head and a longer shaft than your irons, it delivers plenty of distance while getting the ball airborne more easily than a long iron. Below you'll read which wood suits which situation.

3, 5 or 7 wood?

Fairway woods are numbered; the higher the number, the more loft and the higher and shorter the ball flies:

  • 3-wood – around 15° loft, the longest fairway wood; ideal for maximum distance from the fairway or as a driver alternative off the tee.
  • 5-wood – around 18° loft, versatile and a little easier to launch; a great all-rounder.
  • 7-wood – around 21° loft, flies high and lands softly; a comfortable replacement for tricky long irons.

Complete your set

A fairway wood sits between your other clubs in terms of distance. Hit your longest shots with a driver, consider versatile hybrids for long shots too, and use your irons and wedges for the approach to the green. Round off your set with a matching putter.

Fairway woods from top brands

Our range features fairway woods from the best-known golf brands:

  • TaylorMade – including the fast Stealth and Qi woods.
  • Titleist – known for the GT and TSR fairway woods.
  • Cobra – forgiving, adjustable woods.

Frequently asked questions about fairway woods

What is a fairway wood?

A fairway wood is a club with a rounded, hollow head and a longer shaft, made for long shots from the fairway or the tee. It has more loft than a driver and is shorter, which makes it easier to control and helps launch the ball cleanly.

Which fairway wood should I choose: 3, 5 or 7?

If you mainly want distance, a 3-wood makes sense. For a versatile all-rounder, choose a 5-wood. If you find long irons difficult, a 7-wood is a forgiving, high-flying alternative. Many golfers carry two fairway woods in their set.

What is the difference between a fairway wood and a hybrid?

A fairway wood has a larger head and longer shaft and generally flies further. A hybrid is more compact, easier to hit from tricky lies and mainly replaces long irons. They complement each other well in a complete set.
