A hybrid – also called a rescue – is designed to replace long irons. It has a compact, hollow head that glides through the grass more easily and helps launch the ball smoothly. Which hybrid: 3, 4, 5 or 7?

Hybrids are numbered after the iron they replace; the higher the number, the more loft and the higher and shorter the ball flies:

• 3-hybrid – around 19° loft, replaces the 3-iron or a long wood; the longest hybrid for maximum distance.
• 4-hybrid – around 22° loft, a versatile choice that replaces the 4-iron.
• 5-hybrid – around 25° loft, easy to launch and very forgiving.
• 6- and 7-hybrid – around 28–31° loft, replace the mid irons and give plenty of control around the green.
